Overlapping Realities / AR & VR in New Media Art project
“Overlapping Realities” is a New Media Art project that delves into the idea of superimposition—layering digital information onto physical environments. By blending Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), I aim to challenge how we perceive the world around us and blur the lines between the virtual and the real.
As a boundary dweller, I live at the crossroads of different spaces and identities. Having left Korea and become an American, I navigate overlapping cultural landscapes, constantly crossing the limits of inside and outside, good and evil, civilization and savagery, self and others, and even body and mind.
AR and VR technology let me visualize these overlaps directly, combining digital data with tangible surroundings to show that reality isn’t fixed; instead, it’s open to reinterpretation. By inviting viewers to step into these layered realms, I hope to share the transformative power of crossing boundaries, offering a glimpse of a world where each layer—physical and virtual—coexists in dynamic, ever-shifting harmony.
